Spring is Almost Here! - 03/18/14

Hi everyone... welcome to my blog!

I've been trying to think about what to write for my first post.  Since we're just a few days away from the beginning of Spring (Thursday at 11:57am) flowers have been on my mind.  With a new house comes new opportunities for the outside garden!

Since our last frost usually occurs in mid April, I'll wait a few more weeks to plant.  And with the way this winter has been, I wouldn't be surprised to see our cool conditions lasting into April.  But I might as well get started with ideas!  I'd love to have bright color in front of the house, maybe with some pansies, garden phlox, iris and daylilies.  Hostas are always nice to add a bit of texture and green color. What are you favorite garden flowers?

LOCO MOCO RECORD

HONOLULU (AP) -- Mix rice, hamburger, eggs and gravy -- and you get loco moco. It's a favorite in Hawaii. Now, the organizers of Honolulu's annual Rice Festival are claiming a loco moco Guinness World Record. The massive bowl weighed in at 1,126 pounds. It contained 600 pounds of rice, 200 pounds of ground beef, 300 scrambled eggs and 200 pounds of gravy. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the food was donated to charity to help feed the homeless.

NAKED MAN

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- He was naked. He was shouting. And he was in the Wisconsin state Capitol's rotunda. State officials are trying to figure out how the naked guy got into the Capitol yesterday afternoon. A Capitol Police officer quickly led him away. Officials say the man was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct and lewd and lascivious behavior.

MIAMI-WING PROMOTION

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -- University of Miami students are winging it. Fans of the Hurricanes got free chicken wings, thanks to Miami's 22-10 victory over Duke this weekend. Miami cooked up a promotion with Buffalo Wild Wings for the Duke game. Students could get one free wing for every punt by the Blue Devils. Well, Duke punted nine times. The restaurant threw in an extra wing to round it up to regular 10-wing serving. Five-thousand wings were given out Sunday and the promotion was to continue yesterday. Wings for 500 costs about 5,600 bucks.

FRUIT FLIES-WASPS

HONOLULU (AP) -- It could be bug versus bug in Hawaii. The University of Hawaii wants permission to use a tiny wasp to attack medflies. The Mediterranean fruit flies cause millions of dollars in crop damage. The gnat-size wasp is from Kenya and researchers say it won't sting humans. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the state ag department is taking public comment on the proposed wasp release through October 23.
