Miss Nashville Jill Brooks: How Pageants Helped Launch her Country Music Career - Stacy McCloud

Updated: Thursday, October 17 2013, 02:23 PM CDT
NASHVILLE, Tenn - Jill Brooks is taking a rather non traditional approach to what she hopes is a country music career. "I wanted to be on stage because I was a singer. My sister in law did pageants so it was sort of a dare thing" says Brooks.

Over the years, Brooks has won several local pageant titles, allowing her to compete on state level at Miss Tennessee America. Just this June she represented Nashville in the competition. It's a hobby that Brooks says has helped her get to where she is today. "It's important that people know what the Miss American Organization is all about" says Brooks.

Aside from numerous opportunities to showcase her vocal ability, the Miss America Organization taught her things like poise and how to interview, things that are coming in handy as she promotes her debut country album "Shame On Me".  Brooks released the album June 11th. It features seven songs including her first single "The Crash". "It tells a story of girl who is addicted to her significant other and a guy that is addicted to something else, be it drugs or alcohol. They realize that are in love with something that will never love them back" explains Brooks.

The video, which she wrote the treatment for herself, was shot this weekend in her hometown of Columbia. She says her pageant skills were a huge help. "They were floored that I could get changed faster and do my hair faster than Curtis (the co-writer and video co star) could change his shirt and boots."

As much as she loves life in a crown, Brooks says after she hands over her Miss Nashville title in September, she is retiring her pageant rhinestones to hopefully be a full time country music musician.

Jill has a show this weekend in her hometown of Columbia, but it is sold out! They are going to put speakers on the side of the building so that people can hear Jill outside in the square.
