Giles County Sheriff Kyle Helton says his deputies haven't seen many living conditions as bad as the one they investigated Thursday in the community of Prospect.
Helton says the house was full of feces and urine.
"Very unsafe, horrific," said Helton.
Investigators initially checked on the home after a relative of the family that lives there called saying the two children inside hadn't eaten in 7 days.
Helton says his deputies found no evidence to contradict that allegation.
He says there was no food in the fridge just beer and the children were sharing the mobile home with three dogs and a 200 pound pig.
It was enough for investigators to charge parents Chad and Rachel Coffman with two counts of child abuse and neglect each.
Fox 17 News asked Helton if the Coffman's gave an explanation to the home conditions.
"With every indication with our officers they felt like it was normal living conditions to them," said Helton.
Neighbors say the couple moved in about a year ago.
Valerie Slater lives a few blocks down the street.
Slater says the couple met online and Rachel Coffman moved here with her two children to be with Chad.
"Seemed like a really nice guy," said Slater.
Slater says she never noticed any trouble in the home but upon hearng the reason why the couple was arrested she wishes she could've helped.
"I can't imagine anybody letting their children go that long without eating. I wished I'd have known it," said Slater. "I wouldv'e taken them food."
