BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - The power of prevention. Immediate action could mean the difference between life and death from cardiovascular disease. Dan Hitch found out about 4 weeks ago in a routine physical at Lifesigns in Brentwood that he had 5 blockages in his arteries, 2 as much as 80%.
The undetected heart condition was a shock and required immediate action to save him from sudden death. He kicked into high gear to avoid something doctors say is preventable over time.
While family history plays a role in your health, so do daily risk factors like diabetes, hypertension and elevated cholesterol. Dr. Robert Belihar says lifestyle management is crucial. Hitch says he was already on the path to being healthier and had no idea it could end so differently had he not made the recommended routine visit to the doctor's office. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S.
