NASHVILLE (Kai Beech) -- For Rebecca Tracy, finding a rental in Nashville has moved beyond a struggle.
"This weekend I looked at about 15 apartments," she said.
So when Tracy found a two-bedroom, one-bath house in on Pillow St. in Nashville for just S600 a month, she jumped on the opportunity despite several red flags.
"When I called (the alleged property owner’s) phone number it was from Colorado and he told me he was living in Oklahoma with his daughters," Tracy said. "And then he said he owned the house here in Nashville."
The guy identified himself as Ralph Cuevas, posted the property online and said he needed a S600 deposit to hold the property for her. Tracey was so desperate for a rental she mailed him the money.
But they found out everything was a lie and she had been scammed.
Brian Krebs Synergy Real Estate Group is the real leasing agent of this property. He says Nashville's air-tight rental market has made several smart people do really dumb things.
"We’ve put properties out and we’ve had them leased in 72 hours," Krebs said of the high rental demand. "It’s one of those cases where people are just jumping out and saying I need this deal; I want this deal," he added. "They just run to it without reading all the information completely."
As for Tracy she was able to cancel her money transfer and didn't lose any cash but she did file a police report."
"They said that no crime had been committed because he didn't get any of my money," Tracy said of Metro Police. "They said don't trust anybody."
