Saving You Money: Frugal Fun on the Fourth
First, let's start at the grill. If you're serving burgers, frozen patties may not be the cheapest option after all. Instead, shop for manager specials which are simply fresh meat the manager needs to sell in the next couple of days. You can save up to 60 percent and even freeze what you don't use. Also, a lot of grocers have Fourth of July meat markdowns just before the holiday.
When it comes to cookies and cakes, bake your own! Get the kids involved and they'll have fun while you save big. I checked prices on cakes. One cake at a local grocer is $25. You can make it for $4 bucks. It may not be as pretty, but who cares when you're saving that much. A fudge platter priced out at $18 dollars. You can make it for about $5 dollars. And cookies? Local grocers sell these for $8 - $16 dollars. You can make cookies for just a few of bucks.
Thinking about putting on your own fireworks show? First, check city ordinances where you live. It's not legal in most cities to shoot fireworks yourself. If it is, just know you can blow through $100 bucks fast and your show still won't be as good as the pros. There are a couple dozen free fireworks shows in the Midstate. We have the list for you at fox17.com under the community tab.
