LEBANON, Tenn. - Former Lebanon city workers allegedly using their trade secrets to cut corners and steal natural gas. Right now 3 former utility employees are under investigation tonight, accused of tampering with their own home meters to get free gas. So far nobody is charged. The case is an open investigation. Lebanon city leaders consider this an inside job, which came to light by an anonymous letter to the mayor. If you live in Lebanon, your gas meters are being updated to an automatic meter reader system. One of the reasons why is not a good one. A few of the city's meter technicians were allegedly cheating the system, either by tampering with their home meters or failing to report so called broken gas boxes.
Mark Caplenor, Henry Bennett and Ralph Sloan are all 3 no longer on the job and all under investigation. Honest paying gas customers didn't like hearing that either. Customers are now worried their gas bill may go up because of this. The city attorney tells us tonight the first person in this case, Mark Caplenor, is accused of stealing about $10,000 worth of gas over the last 8-9 years.
Apparently at the gas company, veteran employees were allegedly teaching others how to manipulate their meters. Again, this is still an open and active investigation.
