Meningitis Outbreak
Breaking News: TN Health Department reports another death in connection
with a deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis. This brings the number of
people who have died to 8 nationwide, with 4 in TN. Health officials
say the victims contracted the rare form of meningitis from epidural
shots of steroids used for back pain management. The Centers for Disease
Control reports the total number of fungal meningitis cases is now 105
in 9 states. Thirty-five of those cases are in Tennessee. Health officials say they have set up a health emergency health center to help coordinate contacting patients and sharing information between health agencies. This weekend, health officials reached 66 "at risk" patients. The health department is also expanding the time period patients should be concerned to June 27th to September 20th.
