Meningitis Outbreak

Meningitis Outbreak
One of the new Meningitis cases is a 72 year old woman from Bethpage in Sumner County, and her family is talking ONLY to FOX17. Johnnie McKee received a steroid shot at St. Thomas Hospital September 5 to treat back pain. The tainted shot was mixed at the New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts. Fred McKee says they thought they were out of the woods when they made it past the 28-day incubation period, but yesterday doctors told them to head to the hospital when his wife started experiencing an unusual pain in her tail bone. Tests at St. Thomas confirmed it was Meningitis and Mrs. McKee began a powerful IV drug therapy.

"She will do that for approximately 6 days and they'll do another spinal tap and compare the benchmark with the one they took last night as a beginning point," says McKee's husband Fred. "So, I think she's doing fine. I really do. Her spirits are good."

Part of the reason for that optimism is doctors say Mrs. McKee was in excellent health when she came in. Fred McKee says they've got a lot of support from their children and church family and he's optimistic about a complete recovery. We'll have CONTINUING COVERAGE of the Meningitis outbreak. You'll get any overnight developments on TENNESSEE MORNINGS. You can stay up to date by going to Fox17.com and clicking on MENINGITIS in the HOT TOPICS section, or Facebook.com/FoxNashville.
