WBFF Fox 45 :: Saving Energy in a Heat Wave
This heat wave we're dealing with is sure to put a dent in your pocketbook. Aside from setting your AC on 78 or higher, there are other really easy things you can do to take control and cut back. Let's start with fans: which ones to use to cut costs, and which ones are costing you? These ventilation fans you have in your bathroom and kitchen actually suck cool air out of your house, so limit their use as much as possible. When it comes to ceiling fans and box fans, the more you use, the more likely you'll be to keep that thermostat above 78, saving you money. You can save money by unplugging appliances you aren't using, like your computer for example. Would you believe it uses 400 watts or 4 cents of electricity every hour that it's on? That's $28 a month. Unplug things like your tv and coffee makers to cut down on what's known as standby power, when an appliance is on, waiting for you to use it. It's also known as vampire power, or leaking electricity, and it costs the average homeowner up to $600 a year. Your clothes dryer is a real energy hog too. Try hanging your clothes out to dry. That will save you lots. Or if you have to use your dryer, run it at night when it's cooler, because it's less likely to influence your thermostat.
