WBFF Fox 45 :: SAVING YOU MONEY: Physicals
It's hard to believe school will be back in session in just a few short weeks, and many families with athletes are scrambling to pay for those pricey sports physicals required by the TSSAA. Tonight, a way to catch a break and win big. It's that time of year again, when any student who wants to play sports has to endure the poking and prodding, even some personal questions. Though these sports physicals are designed to protect student athletes, they can be a real financial hardship. Just ask grandmother Barbara Ray.

"I'm a single person raising 3 grandkids, so yeah," says Ray.

So, she's taking advantage of FREE sports physicals this week only at the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center in North Nashville.

"It's quite an expense for 3 children and then all the extra things that go with school," says Ray. "School supplies, uniforms and all of that together."

"With sports physicals, we're looking for heart related risks and muskoskeletal injuries," says Certified Nurse Practitioner Amanda Fordham. "Making sure things were caught from last season."

Most insurance plans don't cover these mandatory sports physicals, so walk-in clinics at big name pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens are another low-cost option.

"The cost can range from, in a regular primary care setting, anywhere from $80-$150," says Mary Darden with the CVS Minute Clinic. "We understand not only the physicals, but the equipment and the time spent running kids back and forth to practice adds up."

CVS is charging $49 for sports physicals. Walgreens' price is $39. Both specials run through September. Scoring a low cost or no cost physical pays off.

"Since we're in a recession right now, it's hard to pay for it and I'm glad I came here and got a free physical so I can play for my team," says Hillwood High Senior Davon Patton.

Some schools offer physicals on campus, but not all do.SAVING YOU MONEY: Physicals
