I'm Saving You Money tonight on everything from prom dresses to airfare. A big merger between American Airlines and U.S. Airways may end up costing you. The combo will create the biggest airline in the world meaning airfares could go up. Even though the deal still needs clearance from anti trust regulators and the courts. The merger would leave just four big carriers controlling 80% of domestic air travel.
Doug Parker, the CEO of US Airways says, "I would note, takes, creates a nice third competitor to the 2 larger airlines so our view is it increases competition, it doesn't decrease competition."
However, financial analysts say this $11 billion dollar deal will likely drive up fares. To get the best deal, book exactly 49 days in advance. Cheapair.com says that's when fares are lowest. Flying on Tuesday and Wednesday will also cut costs.
Trying to decide if a membership to a warehouse store is worth it? Costco and Sam's Club can save you money if you don't let your bulk items expire or spoil. That of course, defeats the purpose. One way to save money is to buy in bulk with a friend. You can split perishables like dairy and meat and rake in the savings.
Prom season is always expensive and if you have a dress that you're not wearing, help another girl feel like a princess by donating it. The5th annual Archie's Promise Prom Dress Drive has helped more than 600 Midstate girls. This year's dress giveaway is March 9th. To donate, or to see if you qualify for a free dress, go to Fox17.com and click on Foxlinks.
