WZTV FOX17 :: Oscar-nominated Palestinian documentary director detained briefly at LAX
LOS ANGELES, California - An Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker got a less than warm welcome when he arrived in L.A. for this week's celebrations. Homeland Security threatened to deport him! The documentary "5 Broken Cameras" is about Israeli occupation. It was shot by Emad Burnat, who is a farmer on the West Bank. When Burnat arrived at LAX, security problems arose until filmmaker Michael Moore intervened.

"They stopped me and they started questioning me and they asked me for more proof and more documents, and I told them I had the visa, I had the reservation, I had everything," says Burnat.

"I believe he told them he's an olive farmer, so I think the Homeland Security person was trying to process that," says filmmaker Michael Moore. "'Okay, you're a farmer, you're Palestinian, and you are an Oscar nominee. Right, and I'm nominated for the Nobel Price,' you know."

Burnat's film is entitled "5 Broken Cameras" because he lost that many cameras trying to report on the strife in his village. It's the first Palestinian documentary ever nominated for an Oscar. The Oscars will be awarded this Sunday.
