WBFF Fox 45 :: BEHIND THE SONG:
As with pretty much any song Keith Urban sings, if it's a single chances are it will soar to the top of the charts.

Urban's
latest number one  "You Gonna Fly" was no exception. It's one of only a
few  songs on his latest album that he is not responsible for penning.
That credit goes to these three guys.

"Sometimes you struggle
with a song, but us three, we were on the same page. It was that poor
boy romance story" says Chris Lucas.

Chris Lucas and Preston
Brust from the country group Locash Cowboys and Jaren Johnston , who is a
Nashville rocker and lead singer of "American Bang", were put together
for a songwriting session about two years ago.

"I remember we
didn't have a lot of time that day, someone had to be somewhere and
nstead of canceling or postponing we still got together, thank God"
laughs Preston Brust.

Preston and Chris had never met Jaren, so they weren't sure what to expect when they went into the writing session.

"I
was running through things that sounded rock oriented because I was
thinking we might get a song on American Band's next project and
meanwhile he is thinking he might get on Locash. We were writing for
each other" says Brust.

When they got to Jaren's house tthey were a little thrown off by the atmosphere.

"I have a cool room in my house, burn incense, get a little situation going" laughs Johnston.

But that relaxing ambiance must have been good for something, because
Jaren already had a loop going and a general direction for the chorus.

"We came in blind, stepped into a thankful situation" says Brust.

Once the guys heard it, they were hooked and the song took off!

"After
we established what was gonna be the hook for sure, we went to first
verse, backed up and started walking through the song. It kinda wrote
itself.
I mean when you start a song with 1, 2, 3 baby don't think twice it just starts rolling" says Brust.

"You
Gonna Fly" ended up being the perfect mix of sentimental and party rock
and while they knew it was good, an artist like Keith Urban never came
to mind.

"I was trying to write a stomp southern rock thing,
where if we got out of it, it could work for me or Locash and it ended
up working for Keith - thank God" says Jaren Johnston.

Jaren
demoed the song that night and then the next day interest started coming
in. Soon after they got the call that Keith Urban had to have it!

"I hung up screaming and  had to call back and apologize" says Johnston.

"My phone rings and they said Keith Urban just recorded your song. I just stopped the car and took off running" laughs Brust.

Keith
changed very little about what they had written, a minor key change
and  added the whistle sound you hear in the track. On all levels, from
writing to recording, it was an unlikely match that ended up being the
perfect combination.

"Country music has turned into this song that style, a mix of all 3 of us" says Lucas.

"It puts you in a cool place, really exciting" says Johnston

" We are so thankful! The cake, the icing, the candles, blowing them out, everything all in once" says Brust.
