"I came here is a fiddle player for the Osborne Brothers on the Grand Ole Opry.
He went on to play fiddle for many established artists all the while writing songs.
Then one day Camp realized songwriting was the skill he really wanted to hone in on.
"It's such a rush to come up with something that wasn't there before, nothing on a sheet of paper. Every line makes your heart race
His first hit was a big one, the Garth Brooks summer anthem, Two Pina Coladas. That song was followed by several others including How Long Gone recorded by Brooks and Dunn and "River of Love" by George Strait. But the hit with the most interesting story goes to "Would You Go With Me" recorded by Josh Turner.
Camp says unlike some writers, he usually goes into a session with no one or no subjet in mind.
"Most of the songs I write or co-write just drop out of the sky and that was one of them"
The day he wrote this song it was no different.
"The lick John Scott was playing felt like a banjo roll I don't remember exactly but it just fell out would you go with me" says Camp.
But they did do something Camp had never really done before. They wrote the song with no chorus.
"The structure is kinda odd. It starts out with the title line with every verse"
"Would You Go With Me" ended up on Camps solo album. Then suddenly the song got an offer for a second life. Josh Turner wanted it, but not with out stipulation.
"They asked us to consider writing a bridge or chorus that would lift it up" says Camp.
The guys got to work, shocked that they were even getting the chance.
"99 percent of the time if a producer or artist wants you to re-write a song it's not gonna end up making it to the record" says Camp.
In 30 minutes the chorus was finished and soon after Josh cut the song. Ironically even though he asked them to add lyrics - the country star ended up taking out a big chunk of the song!
