REPORT: TOO MANY TEACHERS, TOO LITTLE QUALITY: NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A new report is slamming America's teachers for not being good educators, and they're pointing the finger at colleges and universities for not providing adequate training. Within the last couple of hours, the National Council on Teacher Quality released its findings after an 8 year study. This is the 2013 Teacher Prep Review. Inside is a detailed critique of over 1000 colleges and universities and the coursework requirements necessary to become a teacher. According to the study, the NCTQ says for the most part colleges are failing to do their job to create good teachers in America. The organization blames the quality of admission standards, and the training and educational coursework being given to teach students how to be good teachers. Here in Tennessee, at least 2 universities are being praised for having strong educational programs. Both Vanderbilt and Lipscomb University were ranked among the top 10% of colleges evaluated in the study. Not everyone is taking this study for fact. The report is drawing criticism from the American Federation of Teachers. The leader of the agency calls it nothing more than a gimmick.

METRO ACTION COMMISSION: Summer can be a dangerous time for children across the Midstate. Many families depend on school lunches to keep kids fed, and when school's out, they are in danger of hunger. The Metro Action Commission is working to make sure that doesn't happen. During the summer months, community centers all offer plenty of activities, and Metro Action makes sure that includes free nutritious meals. Those with the agency say the need is growing.
