Rascal Flatts Visit Children's Hospital-Stacy McCloud
Christmas tradition for the country music group Rascal Flatts includes a visit to Vanderbilt's Children's Hospital. Many of the kids at the hospital don't even feel well enough to get out of bed. But word that Rascal Flatts was there suddenly brightened their day.
There were plenty of smiles and tears of joy as the guys from Rascal Flatts helped Vanderbilt Children's Hospital officially light the hospital tree.
"This isn't something we have to do. Something we get to do. We look forward to doing it."
They sang classic Christmas songs with the kids and took time to pose for pictures and sign autographs for fans like Stacie Erwin. Stacie is a patient at Vanderbilt, but right now doctors aren't sure what's wrong with her.
A frustrating journey, but one thing is for sure.
This is a moment she'll never forget. Stacie says, "I made it myself, but I was still on morphine, so my mom helped me. I love Rascal Flatts and you rock."
The guys meet inspiring fans everyday, but say these little ones fulfill them in the biggest way. "We are in a very unique position to be on stage, look at kids and see them smiling back at us so in some small way we hope they are filling their day, which may not be a good day, with some sort of happiness." "Every time you come there is that instance where you come here and a child sticks out in your mind."
Amongst the crowd is a patient they certainly won't forget. 8 1/2 year old Ireland- an entertainment reporter in the making! "We've got the prettiest reporter in the room."
After a few questions for the guys, Ireland candidly explains to them her type of cancer. Ireland says, "Cause you know how when you have a tumor it attaches to outside? Mine was dead center."
Mom says it's moments like this that helps them hang on. "Good or bad memories .. you have to have memories."
For Jay, Gary and Joe Don, it's these moments they say will make their stardom worthwhile. "I think she's found her next profession. Wonderful job. We love you Miss Ireland."
Through concert fundraisers and giving, Rascal Flatts has donated several million to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital over the years.
The group is currently on their American Living Unstoppable tour. They put out a new album and have had two number one singles in 2009. Rascal Flatts Visit Children's Hospital-Stacy McCloud
