Vanderbilt FB Stars Help Youngsters-(Dave Foster)

Reshard Langford and fellow co-captain George Smith will be two of the Vanderbilt Commodores most important on field leaders this season.

The direction they give off the field is pretty special too.

These two rising seniors giving back during their summer break.

FOX 17's Dave Foster has more on their work with children in need at the Martha O'bryan center!

It's the kids that keep them coming back. George Smith and Reshard Langford have worked at the Martha O'bryan center in East Nashville for three straight summers.

The Vandy football players say the internship has rewarded them -with more than just a paycheck.

Reshard Langford:"just being around them, they give a light to my life when i'm at school. They need us as much as we need them."

George Smith:"to some of them, you're a big brother. A friend, inspiration, a lot of kids need that in their lives coming up."

The seniors are expected to be key contributors this season for the dores' on offense and defense.

Smith is a receiver. Langford returns at safety to anchor the defensive backfield.

But more than that, they are living examples to these children - to dream big.

Marsha Edwards:"these guys can say firsthand, hey, i know who you are. I'm playing sec football. If this is what your dream is, or you've got another one, you can get there, too."

And it's also given the vandy pair a new appreciation for the lessons they've learned in their sport - and how to pass them on.

Langford:"teamwork, cooperation, communication, learning how to do that."

Smith:"you can work with others even though you might not be friends with them or don't know them or they're not from your neighbrohood, it's still possible to communicate or work well with others."

So while it may not mean any extra victories for vandy this fall. These dores have had success off the field this summer. Dave Foster Fox 17 sports.

Reshard and George will end their summer internship this week and get ready for the season.

Dores fall practice starts a week from Thursday August 7th!
