Governor Bredesen Cuts State Jobs - Cindy Carter
Governor Phil Bredesen plans to cut more than two thousand jobs from Tennessee's payroll. State tax revenues are low and Bredesen says he must now trim 468-million dollars from the budget.
The job cuts represent a five percent reduction in Tennessee's workforce. Bredesen plans to offer buyouts as an incentive in hopes most of the layoffs will be voluntary.
He says the details for that package are not worked out yet, but believes it will likely include both money and extended health benefits. Employees should receive the buy-out offer in June and they'll have 45 days beyond that to accept.
