Bible Curriculum Passes Senate
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A proposal that would allow the state Department of Education to develop a curriculum for the academic study of the Bible in public schools has unanimously passed the Senate.
The bill sponsored by Sen. Roy Herron, a Dresden Democrat and former minister, was approved on Wednesday.
The companion bill is waiting to be scheduled for a full vote on the House floor.
Under the bill, school districts would be required to teach the course with an approved textbook in a manner consistent with the state and federal constitutions.
The measure passed the Senate despite an amendment the sponsor says would remove constitutional safeguards in the original bill.
