Bredesen Seeks Tornado Aid
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Phil Bredesen is seeking federal assistance for farmers in Giles, Lawrence and Warren counties after tornadoes caused extensive damage last month.
Bredesen wants the U.S. Department of Agriculture to designate the counties as agricultural disaster areas, which would allow affected farmers to apply for low-interest emergency loans to help them recover.
The governor said Wednesday that the farmers need assistance as quickly as possible to make the most of the growing season that's already upon them.
Farmers reported damage to barns, pastures and cropland, as well as lost equipment and livestock, downed fences and trees, and scattered debris from the April 11 storms.
