Cell Phone Warning-Sarah Bishop
The director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute Dr. Ronald Herberman issues a warning to his staff about a possible connection between cell phone usage and cancer.
Herberman says, "although the evidence is still controversial, I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory (and) to share some precautionary advice on cell phone usage."
Herberman also advises that children should only be allowed to use a cell phone in a case of a case of an emergency.
Herberman adds, "An international expert panel of pathologists, oncologists and public health specialists recently declared that electromagnetic fields emitted by cell phones should be considered a potential human health risk."
But other experts say there is no data to support that opinion.
Vanderbilt Neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Konrad points out the FDA and National Cancer Institute say there is no data correlating brain cancer with cell phone usage.
"The bottom line here is don't panic, we don't perceive of any real threat about cell phones for brain cancer yet," Konrad says.
