English First Signatures Filed - Sky Arnold
It's looking more and more like you may help decide whether English is declared Nashville's official language.
Thursday afternoon Metro Councilman Eric Crafton submitted more than 12 thousand signatures for the English First ballot initiative. If 10,103 are verified the initiative will go on the November ballot.
The plan would require government business be done in English.
Crafton says it's needed to prevent expensive services that cater to people who don't speak English.
"It's mean spirited of government to ask seniors on fixed incomes to pay ever increasing higher property taxes to pay for these services," said Crafton.
Opponents say the plan may cost lots of money to defend in court and is bad for Nashville's image.
"It doesn't seem to be a welcoming message to me. Personally I've seen other cities that have embraced their diversity and tried hard to integrate immigrant communities," said Metro Councilman Erik Cole
Crafton's group, Nashville English First has been gathering signatures since June.English First Signatures Filed - Sky Arnold
