Riverdale High School Fight - Erika Lathon
Just days into the new school year, two Rutherford County students are arrested for fighting at school.
The fight, which some students say was gang related, broke out at Riverdale High School during a class meeting Wednesday.
Four students are now facing disciplinary action.
School officials say while gangs do exist in the community they're not sure what sparked the fight. The brawl was broken up quickly by school resource officers.
Two students were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Two others were removed from campus following a fight in the gym where students were gathered for a sophomore class meeting.
Freshman Harlee Maness said she heard that two boys were crips and the two others were bloods. The fight was sparked by someone talking about another's mother, said Maness.
While several students tell us they believe the fight was gang related, school officials say that's something they can't confirm.
James Evans, with Rutherford County Schools said, "It wouldn't surprise me at all if we had it in out high school because we've heard from time to time of incidents supposedly gang related. Its not a secret to anyone most schools systems around Nashville deal with that at one time."
Evans says with 2300 students enrolled at Riverdale High there will be disagreements between students. Two school resource officers on hand to respond to emergencies.
"School says it happened pretty quickly. It happened in front of several teachers and several officers were there and it was broken up pretty quickly," said Evans.
School officials say one of the students involved in the fight will be sent to an alternative school.
Three others will serve five days of out of school suspension.
School resource officers are a joint agreement between the district and the sheriff's department.
Two officers are stationed at each high school and one officer is assigned to middle and elementary schools.Riverdale High School Fight - Erika Lathon
