The student is from E.A Cox Middle School in Columbia.
Is hospitalized at Vanderbilt University with viral meningitis.
School officials have sent letters home to parents.
Although the child's condition is serious.
It's rarely fatal and difficult to spread.
This type of meningitis is spread from child to child through saliva or mucus.
