MRSA Case in Sumner County Schools - Erika Kurre
A letter has been sent home with Sumner County school children saying a fellow T.W. Hunter Middle School student has contracted MRSA.
It's the third case of the potentially deadly infection reported in the system during the past week and a half since school has started.
MRSA is the most common cause of skin infections and tougher to beat than most strains of staph.
But doctors say hearing about the infection is not surprising and shouldn't be alarming.
Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt Dr. Buddy Creech says, "It’s something that has become quite common, much like strep throat and maybe even influenza. We have it on all our radar screens but we have to keep in mind that it is a form of the typical staph infections that we've seen and known how to treat for years."
Sumner Co. Schools Spokesperson Jeremy Johnson says, "We have cleaned up the classroom and there's no cause to be concerned. It's just a precautionary measure."
The student with MRSA is already treated and back to school.
Doctors say the most simple and effective way to avoid these infections is washing your hands.
