Coach Resigns for Dad Duties
Like many, your Christmas day may have been spent with family.
We introduce you to a family in Brentwood that's a little *bigger* this Christmas.
Scott Oatsvall and his wife have adopted a second girl from China, and her "special needs" mean Scott is resigning his high school coaching job.
It was a Christmas day of toys and boys.. and girls. Yes, this year two girls for Scott and Gwen Oatsvall of Brentwood.
Two years ago we brought you their story of adopting baby Emily from an orphanage in China. Now they celebrate Maggie's first Christmas.
"This is the greatest gift that we could receive from an earthly perspective this Christmas is to have a forever home, a forever family, for this little girl," said Scott Oatsvall.
Two-year-old Maggie is considered "special needs" because she was severely burned when she was six months old in foster care in China, and that's causing Scott, the Girls' basketball coach at Christ Presbyterian Academy, to resign the coaching job to spend more time at home.
"For me right now, says Scott, there's no question this is the absolute right decision for me to step down at this time so I can be with my family."
Scott will continue teaching at CPA, just not coaching. He says two students, Emily Chapman, daughter of Christian singer Steven Curtis Chapman, and Tara Fisher, daughter of Titans head coach Jeff Fisher, inspired him. Their goal is to inspire others to adopt or give money to help couples adopt.
The Oatsvall family has had to make several sacrifices this year with two little girls in the house. For example they have no ornaments on the Christmas tree this year because two-year-old Maggie was just a little too curious."
And their are bigger sacrifices too-- time and money.
Gwen Oatsvall says, "With each new child there's a little less materially and as a family, we sit down and talk about that."
Nine-year-old brother Jeremiah says, "Just thinking of me not having a family or a mom or dad. Well, that's the same for Emily and Maggie so I'll give up anything if I can adopt."
And five-year-old Elijah adds, "It's fun having two sisters and a big brother."
So in this season where THINGS sometimes take center stage, you can look at the Oatsvall family as an example of the bigger picture: new family priorities in the new year, and a first Christmas for Maggie that big sister wants to sing about.
"We wish you a Merry Christmas! We wish you a Merry Christmas! We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"
Adopting a girl from China can cost about $ 20,000, but financial help is available. For more information, go to our website fox17.com and click on fox links.
