WBFF Fox 45 :: Authorities storm Alabama bunker, rescue young boy
by FOX NEWS Reporter Craig Boswell

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. - After being held inside an underground bunker for almost a week, a 5 year old Alabama boy is finally safe tonight. Just 2 days before his 6th birthday, agents rescue a little boy from his captor, ending a hostage situation that had dragged on for 7 days. A dramatic conclusion to the hostage situation ended after FBI agents stormed the gunman's bunker this afternoon.

"Within the past 24 hours, negotiations deteriorated and Mr. Dykes was observed holding a gun," says FBI's Steven Richardson. "At this point, FBI agents, fearing the child was in imminent danger, entered the bunker and rescued the child. The child appears physically unharmed. The subject is deceased."

The little boy, who turns 6 years old this Wednesday, was sent to a local hospital.

"They were calm, not in a hurry, appeared to be on an angle on the stretcher and they took him into the emergency room," says witness Ricky Stokes.

It remains unclear at this point how the gunman, Jim Lee Dykes, died. Bomb technicians are working at his property for improvised explosive devises. The 65 year old allegedly shot and killed a school bus driver before kidnapping the child last Tuesday. It was the day before Dykes was scheduled to appear in court, being accused of shooting at his neighbors. Some neighbors say the Vietnam-era veteran once beat a dog to death with a lead pipe, and patrolled his yard at night with a gun. The bus driver, 66 year old Charles Albert Poland, Jr., has been hailed by many as a hero to protect about 20 other children on the bus. A Dale County Sheriff had said the suspect had a complicated story that he wanted to tell. It remains unclear if that story will every be told or if a motive will be revealed. New information about this ordeal continues to stream out. You can get updates 24/7 at Fox17.com or on our Facebook page. SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say a body has been found in Percy Priest Lake in Middle Tennessee.

WSMV-TV (http://bit.ly/16gYKys) reports officials with Metro Police, the Office of Emergency Management and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency were at the scene Saturday at Hole In The Wall Island. The body was reported to authorities about 11 a.m.

TWRA officials say they believe the deceased man is a boater who disappeared in the lake two weeks ago.

Police said the agencies coordinated with each other to get a boat in the water and recover the body.
