WBFF Fox 45 :: Automotive Ministry Helps People Get Behind The Wheel- Erica Shaffer
We've heard of youth ministries, prison ministries, couples ministries, food ministries... But one Wilson county church has found a new way to serve.
Members of Gladeville Baptist Church have started an automotive ministry...
Guys it really is a unique idea that serves a huge need.
For most of us our car is our life line... But so many have come on tough times and are not able to keep their car or have their car fixed.
Serving that need is the vision for automotive ministries at Gladville Baptist Church.
It's not just the sound of a car starting up... For Bethany Johnson this sound is much more.
Johnson says, “The time and the effort and that they just gave it away and to them they just gave a car away and to me that is how I function with my life.”
Johnson is just one of 23 people who received a car through the Gladeville Baptist Church Automotive Ministries...
Even as we caught up with the group of men who work one day a week for two hours they are working on another car to give to a deserving family.
Butch O'Neal say, “It could easily be me life's circumstances could easily put you in the position that you couldn't get to your job you can't get to your kids.”
The automotive ministry was the brainchild of Butch O'Neal and Doe Dayton.
Butch O'Neal says, “We had this vision that we could possibly get out and get cars make them usable for the general public.”
Doe Dayton says, “People want to help people as a general rule they just won't take that step so butch and I took the step and recruited guys to come in and help.”
Almost everything you see inside this repair garage was donated- from the lift, to the tools to the cars.
The men who work on the cars don't know who will receive each one... So when they were working on this van... They didn't know it would help a single mother get a job and provide a chance to take her children to and from band practice.
Pamela Hieronimous says, “They've just given me the power and the ability and the prayers have all been answered to help provide that for me and give me a chance to start over and do good.”
The founders hope this garage will one day be a chance to mentor young men and provide workshops.
The Automotive Ministries say it is in great need of supplies and car donations --whether they run or not.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Queen Elizabeth's youngest son, Prince Edward, is visiting Tennessee to promote one of the British royal family's charities, the Duke of Edinburgh's awards.

The prince presided over an awards ceremony at the governor's mansion in Nashville on Thursday for the first batch of young Tennesseans to participate in the leadership and character program.

About 80 youths received the award by participating in community service, skills development, physical fitness and adventurous journeys through the Boy Scouts, Boys and Girls Clubs, LEAD Academy, Montgomery Bell Academy or the Miss Tennessee Scholarship Organization.

Following the event, Gov. Bill Haslam and first lady Crissy Haslam invited the awardees and their families to tea inside the governor's residence. Later on Thursday, the prince was scheduled to headline a black-tie gala at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.
