WBFF Fox 45 :: Bill Would Allow Teachers To Teach Armed -- Sky Arnold
Buford Tune has addressed armed dangers personally as a former Metro tactical officer and professionally as part of the class he runs at the Academy of Personal Protection and Security.

Fox 17 News asked him what he thinks about teachers being allowed to carry guns in schools.

" If they're properly trained I don't have a problem with it," said Tune.

The worry Tune has is that teachers will someday be carrying guns without that training.

It's a debate State Lawmakers are going to have this year.

State Senator Stacey Campfield filed a bill that would allow teachers who work in schools that don't have resource officers to carry guns.

"People deserve the ability to defend themselves if they so choose," said Campfield.

Those teachers would have to have a carry permit and they'd also need to go through an initial 40 hours of school resource officer training and then an extra 15 hours of training each year.

"A lot of people say, well there will be a shootout. To me, if I'm a bystander I prefer a shootout to an execution," said Campfield.

Campfield said teachers asked him to file the bill but the union that represents Metro teachers has serious concerns.

"Teachers got into the profession to educate children not to be police officers.  That's a totally different role," said MNEA President Stephen Henry.

Tune believes teachers could learn that role but he worries the SRO training won't be enough.

"Even typical level 1 law enforcement training is not enough training for people to be in schools to address an active shooter," said Tune.Bill Would Allow Teachers To Teach Armed -- Sky Arnold

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
