WBFF Fox 45 :: Clarksville Man Reported Dead in Peru Plane Crash
A U.S. cargo helicopter crashed yesterday afternoon in the jungles of Peru, killing seven people, including a mechanic from Clarksville.
One of those killed is identified by the Associated Press to be Jaime Pickett, a mechanic from Clarksville.
According to the AP, the heavy-lift helicopter, owned by Columbia Helicopters of Portland, Oregon, crashed after taking off from the provincial capital of Pucallpa. Five Americans and two Peruvians were reportedly killed.
The company's vice president of marketing says that the plane was en route to a drilling location in northern Peru.
A local police commander says that it appears the victims jumped out of the helicopter out of desperation.
Witnesses quoted say the plane lost control and spewed smoke before crashing.
The airport control tower lost contact with the aircraft five minutes after takeoff at just after 3 p.m., Peru's civil aviation authority reported. Controllers report seeing "a big cloud of smoke" four miles northeast of the airport.
No information on what might have caused the crash has been released, but the company denies overcrowding.Clarksville Man Reported Dead in Peru Plane Crash
