WBFF Fox 45 :: Council Approves Option that Could Help with Poll Worker Shortage
The next time Metro School Board members are up for re-election, there could be a shortage of people to work the polls. Tonight Metro Council is discussing one way to help solve that problem. To give you an idea how much of a concern this is, during the last election, some precincts asked voters personally if they wanted to volunteer to be a poll worker in November. Tonight the council approved an option that could eventually help with that problem. Under the current charter, Metro employees are not allowed to work as poll workers. The council decided tonight to let voters decide whether to change that ban. That charter amendment will now be on the November ballot. We asked Election Administrator Albert Tieche. He says he doesn't see a problem with Metro employees working elections.

"I don't think it's a conflict, we have a lot of laws on the books, state laws, candidates cannot work and various folks who for one reason or another would be inappropriate to work," says Tieche. "For teachers or Metro employees to help us put on these elections will be a good thing."

Election officials need as many as 1000-1500 poll workers to handle a given election.

Man charged with faking marriage to visit inmate
May 22, 2013 13:32 GMT

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Washington County authorities say a man faked a marriage certificate so he could visit a woman held in the Johnson City Detention Facility.

The Johnson City Press (http://bit.ly/14QBr9L ) reports investigators discovered the ruse after the May 14 visit by 32-year-old Robert S. Hicks of Elizabethton. Hicks was arrested Tuesday on a charge of criminal simulation. He was jailed at the Washington County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bond, pending a court appearance Wednesday.
