(CNN) A new study shows the credit score you can access online may not be the same one lenders use. Credit scores determine if you can make big purchases like cars and homes-- and whether or not you are approved for a credit card.
You have always had access to one free report a year-- but you have to pay to get the actual numeric score. Now the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has studied 200,000 credit files and made an alarming discovery.
In as many as about one quarter of cases, the scores consumers paid to see-- were different from the scores the lenders see when making decisions on loaning you money.
Some scores were so wildly different, it knocked them up or down 100 points in a system where the highest scores are over 740 points.
A group representing the credit bureaus defends the industry's consistency-- saying the study found "a high correlation among scores." The group plans a consumer education campaign on credit scores.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
