Police say road rage likely caused the death of a Murfreesboro man this morning. 55 year old James Smithey died after police say the truck he was driving crashed after he swerved to avoid hitting another vehicle. Tonight his stepdaughter, who is the mother of 3 children that were also in the truck, spoke ONLY to FOX17. The stepdaughter of 55 yea rold James Smithey was too distraught to show her face, but not too devastated to tell FOX17 her stepfather was a good man and a fighter. Smithey lost his life in a crash Murfreesboro Police say was likely caused by a case of road rage. Witnesses reported seeing a Ford truck and a white car driving erratically on Northwest Broad Street near Singer Road just before 7am. Smithey's 14 year old granddaughter and 2 grandsons, ages 8 and 7, were in the truck. Witnesses say that's when the truck swerved off the road and flipped several times. The children were treated and released. Police are still searching for the white car investigators say left the scene.

"It's tragic, I mean to see somebody lose their life over something so small," says Stephen Merritt, who works near where the accident took place. "You know, because our anger gets the best of us sometimes, it could cause someone to lose their life and cause a family member to lose their loved ones."

Haslam's chief deputy Claude Ramsey to retire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.

The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.

Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.

His last day on the job is August 31.
