WBFF Fox 45 :: Experts: Laughter is the Answer to Improving Your Health
by CNN's Susan Hendricks

When it comes to improving your health, there are plenty of changes you can make, like watching your diet, upping your exercise and drinking more green tea. Some cardiologists say you may just want to add a little laughter to your life. Hustle and bustle of the new year got you down? Stressed out already? Maybe it's time to let it all out with a good laugh.

"Some studies suggest it lowers blood pressure," says University of Maryland School of Medicine's Dr. Michael Miller. "There have been other investigators who have shown it may have an affect on immune response, so perhaps a better response from someone who has a common cold or infections when they laugh."

Researchers have found that laughing not only loosens us up and opens up our blood vessels, it can also de-stress us. That's good, because stress can cause the brain to overload with chemicals that could lead to high blood pressure, even a stroke or heart attack.

"You can easily counteract a stressful response with laughter," says Dr. Miller.

Best ways to get a good chuckle? Doctors recommend spending time with friends or enjoying a funny book or a comedy on tv or at the movies. Try to see the humor in life.

"Laughter is by far among the best medicines that we can take," says Dr. Miller.

First lady to high school grads: live your dreams
May 18, 2013 19:28 GMT

By ERIK SCHELZIG Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- First lady Michelle Obama has some advice for some Tennessee high school graduates: strike your own path in college and life and work to overcome inevitable failures with determination and grit.

Mrs. Obama spoke for 22-minutes to the Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School in Nashville in her only high school graduation speech this year.

The first lady told the 170 graduates that she spent too much of her own time in college focusing on academic achievements. She said while her success in college and law school led to a high-profile job, she ended up leaving to focus on public service.

Mrs. Obama had this message for the graduates: "Do not waste a minute living someone else's dream."

Mrs. Obama later presented graduate diplomas on stage.
