A plane makes a stop in Middle Tennessee before crashing in Gary, Indiana. Officials tell us at least one person is dead. Flight records show the craft left St. Augustine, Florida for Smyrna yesterday.
After an overnight stay, it left this morning for Gary, Indiana.
No one will confirm why the plane stopped overnight at the Smyrna airport.
We have learned the aircraft was registered to Gandy LLC. in St. Augustine, Florida.... But not who was on board.
Just before 9:30 Wednesday morning a Cirrus SR 22 single engine four -seater plane left this Smyrna airport ...
According to a flight plan the aircraft was set to arrive in Gary, Indiana at 11:19 am... But it never made it… The flight instead ended in a firey crash just a mile from the Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Daryl Smith, Gary Deputy Fire Chief says, “The aircraft is in multiple pieces and when we arrived it was burning of course- we cannot determine all of the parts of the aircraft at this time.”
Officials say the plane crashed in a semi-residential area
Karen Freeman-Wilson, Mayor of Gary says, “There was an aircraft that went down - it went down actually between two schools and it is at times like this that you know there has to be a supreme being because we have the Westside Lighthouse Charter School in this footprint and you also have the Abowman Academy.”
No one on the ground was hurt during the crash - but witnesses described to first responders what they heard
Wade Ingram, Gary Chief of Police says, “We spoke with some people in the school they heard a bang - they thought it was a truck accident.”
The number of people on board the aircraft still has not been determined... But from the gruesome wreckage the coroner says at least one person has died
Karen Freeman-Wilson , Mayor of Gary says, “There was some separation of the body or bodies and the coroner is in fact gathering the body parts and also taking pictures so that they can preserve as much information as possible.”
The Mayor of Gary says according to the control tower at the airport there was no distress signal made
The picture of the plane in the story you just saw was the same type of plane - not the exact plane that crashed .
The coroner and several other agencies will be back at the scene tomorrow to continue their investigations. There is still no cause for the why the plane went down.
