While some gun salesmen don't believe reinstating an assault weapons ban will make us safer, they aren't dismissing the Obama plan altogether. The owner of Guns and Ammo Depot in Bellevue says it's a good time to be in the firearms business. Gun store owner Glen King says they haven't had an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle to sell since before Christmas. He says renewing the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 will do nothing to make our communities safer.
"It's not the gun," says King. "It's the people and that's where we need to start with the background checks, a different type maybe, and I think it'll help a lot."
The Obama plan would make sharing information among local, state and federal agencies to improve background checks a priority. It would also remind healthcare providers about their obligation to report patients they believe represent a threat.
"Everyone needs to calm down and take a deep breath and look at these proposals," says U.S. Attorney Middle Tennessee District Jerry Martin.
Martin says authorities in the Midstate already work together. He sees the President's plan largely as common sense.
"We have no magic wand to curb gun violence to the extent it's non-existent, but these proposals go a long way to at least reducing it," says Martin.
Alexander Cade just finished his concealed carry training, and he's behind the President.
"I'm not gonna say it's gonna keep all, but it's going to reduce it because guns can be bought off the streets illegally, so by a background check you'll have a lot more certified users than non-certified," says Cade.
The largest pieces of the President's plan require Congressional approval. In Tennessee, Congressman Cooper (D-TN 5th District) says he believes the President is largely on the right track, but Congressmen Black (R-TN 6th District) and Blackburn (R-TN 7th District) say they will not support attacks on the 2nd Amendment.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
