WBFF Fox 45 :: Fishing Ban Catches Controversy with Area Anglers
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Thousands of Tennessee fishermen are angry over plans to limit boat access to some parts of the Cumberland River. The Army Corps. of Engineers says the areas close to its dams and locks are dangerous and put boaters at risk. It's an idea that's not sitting well with local fishermen. They say the restrictions would close off the best fishing spots and would cost the state millions in tourism dollars. There is good fishing in the turbulent waters below Old Hickory Dam, but the Army Corps. of Engineers says large water discharges create hazardous industrial areas that are unsafe and should be off limits to boaters. In 1996, the Corps. passed regulations to restrict boat access just above and below 10 dams on the Cumberland River, but the rules have rarely been enforced. Fishermen say it will cut off access to the best fishing and kill a multi-billion dollar industry.

"Big fish love to live below dams and spillways," says Tennessee Wildlife Federation CEO Mike Butler. "Better oxygen, environment to live and great place to catch them and have a good time doing it. If you follow rules it's safe."

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court
June 18, 2013 13:02 GMT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.

The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.

Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.

In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
