A Ft. Campbell soldier's fate now lies in the hands of a Montgomery County judge after being convicted of killing his wife three years ago. Sentencing for Jonathon Downing is scheduled for Tuesday at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
Downing was convicted of voluntary manslaughter after shooting his wife Sena to death at the couple's home during an argument three years ago.
Downing was originally charged with first degree murder, but after jury deliberations following his three day October trial, he was convicted of a lesser charge--voluntary manslaughter.
Downing's lawyers didn't deny the soldier shot his wife but argued he was provoked in his actions. The Defense claimed Downing's wife Sena hit him while she was drunk and say that's what led up to the deadly shooting.
There were reports of domestic violence problems at the Downing home before Sena was killed. Sena's grandmother gave an exclusive interview to her hometown newspaper where she was quoted blaming the stresses of war for her granddaughter's murder.
