Homeowners fighting to close the new Murfreesboro mosque will have to wait until next week to find out if they can join the lawsuit that allowed it to open. Last month a federal judge ordered county officials to give the mosque an Occupancy Permit if the work was up to codes, overruling a county court that said developers had to start the permit process all over again. Friday, Judge Kevin Sharp heard arguments that mosque opponents deserve a seat at the table in federal court.
"In case law, that's law from higher courts saying intervention shall be liberally granted," says Plaintiff Attorney Joe Brandon. "We hope, we expect that we'll be allowed to intervene in this case and give the Department of Justice some opposition. They need some opposition."
Opponents eventually hope to convince the court to close the mosque because neighbors didn't get proper notice it was being built.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.
Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).
Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.
MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.
CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
