The incident happened just before 6 p.m. at 134 Payne Springs Road, according to a detective with the Dickson Police Department. Laura Waynick, 37, and her husband, Roger Waynick, 37, went to the home of her children's father, Matthew Jones, 37, to pick up their two kids, a 10-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy.
Jones confronted Roger regarding an accusation from one of the kids that he had smacked them in the head. After Roger confirmed that he did so, Jones then started beating him through the window.
Roger pulled out a gun and fired several rounds, hitting Jones in the back left side. The shooting took place in front of the children, according to police.
Jones was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt Medical Center. The extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.

Christian legal group complains about assignment
June 20, 2013 11:46 GMT
COLUMBIA, Tenn. (AP) -- Columbia State Community College officials say they're investigating a professor's assignment about gay rights.
According to The Daily Herald a Christian legal group sent the college a letter about Professor Linda Brunton's psychology class assignment. The Alliance Defending Freedom said students complained to the group.
Some students objected to being told to wear a rainbow ribbon and make statements in support of gay rights. They were then to write a paper detailing discrimination they faced for their perceived support.
The legal group asked the college to investigate the assignment, discipline Brunton and order her to apologize to students.
Chris Sanders of the Tennessee Equality Project told The Tennessean the assignment was voluntary and is commonly used in psychology classes.
Brunton was unavailable for comment.
