WBFF Fox 45 :: Karate School Offers Free Lessons For Teachers -- Sky Arnold
Knowing how to fend off an assailant is a basic lesson at David Deaton Karate.

"We tell everyone that goes through any self defense class we have to expect the unexpected," said Deaton.

Deaton believes that philosophy is something schools need to be applying in a world where shootings like Sandy Hook are possible.

It's why he's making lessons available free for teachers February the 2nd at all three of his schools.

Deaton believes self defense is now a job requirement for teachers.

"The thing that happened in Connecticut where we saw the tragedy that occurred there I felt like there was a need for teachers to have personal self defense awareness skills," said Deaton.

Metro School Psychologist Kim Schletzer is among those who are interested in the workshop.

"I'm not the biggest person in the world and I would like to know I have a way to protect myself if necessary," said Schletzer.

Schletzer's son is already one of the students and the karate school and she says the Sandy Hook tragedy really hit home because a school psychologist was among the victims.

"My first thought was my mortality and I would've done the same thing," said Schletzer.

The hope is a few lessons at Deaton's school might help teachers do the right thing if something wrong shows up in their classroom.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.

The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.

Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.

His last day on the job is August 31.
