WBFF Fox 45 :: Last Day For State Fair, Officials Say Attendance Went Up
The fair is wrapping up its final day and fair organizers are already looking forward to next year.
That is a change in tune for the Tennessee State Fair.
In recent years the fate of the Tennessee State Fair has been in question - especially whether or not the fair would return to the Tennessee State Fairgrounds... But this year officials seem confident the fair will be back and better than ever.
It's the last day for the Tennessee State Fair and parents and their children alike are taking advantage of the fun activities the fair has to offer.
Mike Purcell says, “It has been here a long time - it is kind of a Nashville institution it has changed a little bit but it is still fun.”
Michigan lumberjack performer Bruce Belanger says with schedule conflicts he has never been able to make it to the Tennessee State Fair until now.
Bruce Belanger says, “I never was able to come to the Tennessee State Fair and finally this year I was able to attend it - and I will tell you what my friend Dale who usually is here for me he told me how it was with all the nice people and the wonderful fair and ill tell you what he was absolutely right.”
Fair officials say this year has been very successful.
Kelsey Ross says, “The State Fair has been great this year we have been up five percent in overall paid attendance - yesterday we were up 10 percent.”
But even with the smiles it provides to families each year this fair has had its "fare" share of tough times...Especially when it came to keeping the fair at the South Nashville fairgrounds.
Just last year Mayor Karl Dean suggested the fairgrounds were no longer a "suitable location" to hold the state fair.
Fair officials hope this year's success will allow the fair to sprout up in the same location next year....
Ross says, “At this point we are moving forward with the steps to make sure that the fair is back here at this grounds next year - that is of course subject to change as there are multiple parties involved but at this point the plan is to be back here at the Tennessee state fairgrounds next year.”
The fair board along with the private group the State Fair Association guaranteed the fair would remain at the South Nashville fairgrounds in 2011 and 2012 but a decision has yet to be made for 2013.

Man pleads guilty to Memphis officer's murder
May 21, 2013 22:22 GMT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former death row inmate is set to be released from prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of a Memphis police officer.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Tuesday that she has accepted Timothy McKinney's guilty plea.

McKinney was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Officer Don Williams. The officer was killed outside a comedy club in December 1997.

McKinney appealed and won a new trial, which ended with a deadlocked jury. A third trial earlier this year also ended in a hung jury.

The Commercial Appeal reports that McKinney was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since he's already served more than 15 years -- including 11 on death row -- McKinney will be released this week.

Williams' family opposed the settlement.
