WBFF Fox 45 :: Lipscomb University officially opens new Nursing and Health Sciences Center
Lipscomb University officially opened its new 24,800-square-foot Nursing and Health Sciences Center Thursday with a dedication ceremony and tours of the training facility, which can also be used as an emergency triage center in times of crisis.

The $8.5 million center will be a site for traditional classroom learning as well as the teaching of assessment skills in a laboratory and treatment skills in a 16-bed unit which simulates a hospital environment. The Health Simulation Lab features 19 computerized mannequins, that can display symptoms of a range of illnesses and wounds, in an authentic hospital-like setting.

The patient mannequins can bleed, vomit, cough, suffer cardiac arrest, display abnormal heart and breath sounds, give birth and respond to specific treatments.

In the event of a disaster on campus or in the community it can be converted into a 30-bed initial assessment site to triage patients prior to being transported to higher levels of care.

This facility is part of the university’s next initiative to invest $125 million dollars in the university by its 125th anniversary in 2016.

Houston brother will be his own attorney in court
June 18, 2013 13:02 GMT

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Roane County man will face federal gun violation charges next month without an attorney.

The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/17VlXpM ) reported Rocky Joe Houston will represent himself on a charge of possession of a gun by a felon.

The charge came after Houston earlier represented himself in state court on charges stemming from a police chase. He was convicted of evading arrest and reckless endangerment.

Houston and his brother, Leon Houston, were tried, but not convicted, in the 2006 shooting deaths of a Roane County deputy and his ride-along companion.

In federal court, Rocky Joe Houston is claiming the officer who charged him with the felony had no legal authority.
