WBFF Fox 45 :: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Raises $650,000
The American Cancer Society says $650,000 was raised at its 11th Annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event that was held at LP Field in Nashville on Saturday.
More than 20,000 community members participated in the 5 mile walk to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate women about the importance of early detection and prevention; and raise money to fund lifesaving research and support programs to further the progress against this disease.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has been the American Cancer Society's rallying cry to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer since the first nationwide event was launched in 1993. Since then, Making Strides has raised more than $460 million nationwide to end breast cancer.
"Almost everyone has been touched by breast cancer in some way," said Angelia Wyatt, 2012's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Event Manager. "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer gives us the chance to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer and help ensure that future generations are not faced with this life-threatening disease. Making Strides truly demonstrates that hope starts with each and every one of us."
The money raised through Making Strides helps the American Cancer Society to save lives by helping people stay well by taking steps to prevent cancer or find it early; helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking research; and by fighting back by encouraging lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.

SMYRNA, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities say a body has been found in Percy Priest Lake in Middle Tennessee.

WSMV-TV (http://bit.ly/16gYKys) reports officials with Metro Police, the Office of Emergency Management and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency were at the scene Saturday at Hole In The Wall Island. The body was reported to authorities about 11 a.m.

TWRA officials say they believe the deceased man is a boater who disappeared in the lake two weeks ago.

Police said the agencies coordinated with each other to get a boat in the water and recover the body.
