Nashville Mayor Karl Dean will speak at the 12th annual Fellowship Breakfast at 7 a.m. honoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday. This year's event features A.C. Wharton, Jr., Mayor of Memphis, as the guest speaker, an Americana trio and a youth performance art group. Hutton Hotel in Vista Ballroom (6th floor), 1808 West End Avenue.
TSU: The day's activities begin at 9 a.m., with a prayer service at the Jefferson Street Baptist Church. More than 50 TSU students, faculty and staff will board buses at 9:30 a.m., in front of Kean Hall to carry out cleanup and painting projects at two Nashville fire stations at 101 Polk Avenue and 2589 Whites Creek Pike.
Mayor Karl Dean will greet volunteers and assist in a painting project at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 at Nashville Fire Department Station No. 13, 410 45th Avenue North, to commemorate the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.
Local volunteer event taking place on Monday, January 21st as part of the Allstate Give Back Day program. Volunteers will be out at Second Harvest Food Bank, 331 Great Circle Rd., from 8:30 - 1130 a.m. Volunteers will be sorting food and assisting with various needs at the Food Bank. For the fifth consecutive year, Allstate is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., by encouraging individuals across the country to volunteer in their communities on MLK Day 2013 through its Give Back Day program.
Mayor Karl Dean will be the keynote speaker for a special MLK Day event at the Gordon Jewish Community Center on January 21. His talk, on freedom, will take place at a lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The luncheon, open to the public, costs $10.
The City of La Vergne will honor the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on at 10 a.m. The remembrance ceremony will take place at City Hall located at 5093 Murfreesboro Rd
At Discovery Center at Murfree Spring, families can learn more about Dr. King at a day-long free celebration that will include food samples from local eateries at 9 a.m., music by Chaplain Ernest Newsom from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and words from Pastor Jaymes Mooney at 11:30 a.m. Artwork by Bellwood Preschool and Middle Tennessee Medical Center's Mobile Health Unit will be on display. Festivities are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Discovery Center, 502 S.E. Broad St.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Gathering and March will begin at 11:30 a.m. The preliminary gathering will take place at Central Middle School, and the march will begin at noon, ending at Patterson Park Community Center with an excerpt of Dr. Martin Luther King's speech by Pastor Donald Whitmore. Afterward, a viewing of the Inauguration Ceremony for President Barack Obama will be offered at Patterson Park.

Haslam's chief deputy Claude Ramsey to retire

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Gov. Bill Haslam says chief deputy Claude Ramsey is retiring at the end of August to spend more time with his family in Chattanooga.
The Republican governor said in a news release on Wednesday that the 70-year-old Ramsey has been integral to his administration on key initiatives that include civil service reform, economic development efforts, workforce development training and improved operation of state government.
Ramsey was elected to the General Assembly in 1972 where he served four years in the House. He was Hamilton County's mayor for 16 years.
His last day on the job is August 31.
