WBFF Fox 45 :: Montgomery Co. Introduces New Safety Plans to Protect Schools
Since the deadly school shooting in Connecticut, security has been a topic being discussed in schools nationwide. Today, Montgomery County officials are joining the ranks, and as FOX17's Meagan O'Halloran tells us, they've introduced new safety plans to protect schools county-wide. He's the biggest man on campus, and School Resource Officer David Cobb takes his job very seriously.

"I do investigations, anything dealing with the law, thefts, I investigate that as well," says Cobb.

Most importantly, he's at New Providence Middle School in Clarksville to protect students, and keep them out of harms way. Now he will have another task added to his job description. Montgomery County officials, along with other counties in the area, have taken a proactive approach to beef up security in Montgomery County. They're looking to School Resource Officers to help take the lead on that. In a press conference Friday morning, school and law enforcement officials announced they were planning to have current SRO's train off duty officers and place them at each public elementary school.

"These are our children and there's nothing more important to all of us and all of you and to all the citizens of Clarksville/Montgomery County to keep our children safe," says Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan.

$140,000 has been set aside for the immediate short term to place off duty officers at elementary schools through the Spring semester.

Miss. chooses new firm to run Woodville prison
May 18, 2013 20:50 GMT

WOODVILLE, Miss. (AP) -- Mississippi officials have picked a new company to run the Wilkinson County Correctional Facility.

Utah-based Management and Training Corp. announced Friday that the Mississippi Department of Corrections has chosen it to run the 1,000-bed prison starting July 1, the Natchez Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/10MvOGv).

Corrections Corporation of America, based in Nashville, Tenn., had run the prison since 1998. MTC says it will keep "the vast majority" of employees.

MTC will get a five-year contract to run the prison with two one-year options. Last year, officials chose MTC to take over East Mississippi Correctional Facility, the Walnut Grove Correctional Facility and the Marshall County Correctional Facility from the GEO Group. MTC won 10-year contracts for each.

CCA still runs the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility and the Adams County Correctional Center in Mississippi.
