WBFF Fox 45 :: Nissan Adds Third Shift at Smyrna Plant

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Japanese automaker Nissan Motor Co. is adding a third shift at a vehicle assembly plant in Tennessee, a move that creates more than 800 jobs.

Gov. Bill Haslam announced the jobs increase Friday at an economic development conference in Nashville. Haslam says it's the first time the plant will operate on three shifts.

About 2,000 jobs in all have been added to the site since the middle of last year. Roughly 5,600 people currently work at the plant that first began production in 1983.

The plant makes Nissan's most popular car, the midsize Altima sedan, and soon will produce the Leaf electric car and Rogue SUV.

The company also recently announced it is expanding an engine plant in Decherd, Tenn. Nissan's American headquarters are in Franklin, just outside Nashville.

Solar panels that obscure school might be moved
May 24, 2013 13:13 GMT

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A wall of solar panels in front of a Surgoinsville school might be moved out back.

The panels are part of an ambitious project under which solar collection panels have been installed at 20 Hawkins County school facilities to cut utility costs and sell back power to TVA.

But the Kingsport Times-News (http://bit.ly/18burcf ) reported the wall of panels at Surgoinsville Middle School has some people worried about school security and others upset at what they see as an eyesore.

The panels are 7 feet high and stretch the length of a football field. They obscure viewing the school.

At a school board work session Thursday, board members talked about moving the array. It can't be voted on until the regular board meeting on June 4.
