WBFF Fox 45 :: Policy Change Allows Metro Police to Carry Rifles
A change in policy has been announced by Metro Police that will permit officers who receive the proper training and approval to carry patrol rifles in their police vehicles while on duty.
The new policy emphasizes that officers are to retrieve their rifles only when it is clear that a tactical advantage over a criminal suspect is warranted. Authorization to carry a rifle can be revoked for violation of guidelines.
Guidelines maintain that each rifle must be inspected for uniformity and is individually approved. No modifications can be made to the rifle once it is approved. The rifle is subject to inspection at any time. And each officer approved to carry a rifle must complete a three-day course.
Twenty officers who personally own rifles, will take part in the first training course later this month. Nearly 1,400 of Nashville's officers personally own such rifles.
"This policy change is in the best interest of public and officer safety," says Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson. "It has become increasingly clear that a pistol and shotgun may not be enough for an officer to stop a threat to innocent citizens."Policy Change Allows Metro Police to Carry Rifles

Man pleads guilty to Memphis officer's murder
May 21, 2013 22:22 GMT

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A former death row inmate is set to be released from prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder of a Memphis police officer.

Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich said Tuesday that she has accepted Timothy McKinney's guilty plea.

McKinney was convicted of first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Officer Don Williams. The officer was killed outside a comedy club in December 1997.

McKinney appealed and won a new trial, which ended with a deadlocked jury. A third trial earlier this year also ended in a hung jury.

The Commercial Appeal reports that McKinney was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Since he's already served more than 15 years -- including 11 on death row -- McKinney will be released this week.

Williams' family opposed the settlement.
