"Number one the debt ceiling increase," says Congressman Cooper. "Without that America is crippled and without that we shut down government and lower our credit rating."
Congressman Cooper says the country desperately needs to address that issue along with tax reform and entitlement spending. Both Tennessee Senators also discussed a need for entitlement spending control today. They're worried about the future when Medicare may not take in enough to pay its bills.
"The President needs to do as good a job letting the American people know about the Medicare fiscal cliff as he has done in persuading the American people that it's a good idea to tax the rich," says US Senator Lamar Alexander.
Both Senators are now sponsoring a bill that would tie an increase in the debt ceiling to spending cuts for programs like Medicare. Among their proposals to make those cuts: raise the Medicare eligibility age incrementally from 65 to 67 by the year 2027.
